Mike Pettine has officially joined the Dallas Cowboys as a senior defensive assistant, bringing over two decades of NFL experience to a struggling defense. After a call from defensive coordinator Christian Parker, Pettine decided to step in and help, stating, 'When somebody you care about, a friend that's in need and asks for some help, you answer the call.'
Pettine's arrival comes at a crucial time for the Cowboys, who currently rank 31st in total defense, allowing 395.4 yards per game. His focus will be on supporting Parker and head coach Brian Schottenheimer as they work to improve the unit's performance. Pettine noted, 'I'm just here to support him... in any way I can.'
In addition to Pettine's hiring, the Cowboys are making adjustments to their lineup. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is set to become a full-time starter after recovering from a stomach bug that sidelined him in Week 5. He played 48.1% of defensive snaps in the previous game and is expected to significantly increase his workload against the Green Bay Packers.
Rookie edge rusher Malachi Lawrence is also expected to see more opportunities after recording his first career sack last week. With a pressure rate of 14.3%, he has shown promise and will be crucial in the Cowboys' efforts to contain the Packers' potent passing attack.
As the Cowboys prepare for their matchup against the Packers, the urgency to improve their defensive performance is palpable. Pettine's experience and the adjustments in personnel could be key factors in turning around their season.
