Houston’s First Task for Harrison: Make a Small Playbook Count

Marvin Harrison Jr. is set for a London debut, but the Texans are building his role rather than promising an immediate offensive overhaul.

Marvin Harrison Jr. is set to make his Houston Texans debut against Jacksonville in London on Sunday, October 18. His arrival gives C.J. Stroud a familiar receiver, but their college connection will not eliminate the practical work of joining a new offense.

Coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed Harrison would play after the receiver’s first Houston practice Wednesday. The plan is to give him assignments he can execute confidently. Ryans said the Texans do not expect him to play every offensive snap immediately.

Harrison joined Houston following a trade with Arizona. The Texans sent 2027 second- and seventh-round picks to the Cardinals and received Harrison and a 2027 sixth-round selection. Houston is trying to turn the move into useful production while the season is already underway.

The reunion with Stroud provides a starting point. They played together at Ohio State in 2021 and 2022. That shared experience offers familiarity with each other’s tendencies, although Harrison still has to learn Houston’s terminology and responsibilities.

The receiving group remains led by Nico Collins. Adding the 6-foot-3 Harrison gives Stroud another sizeable option, rather than requiring the newcomer to become the immediate centre of the passing game.

Offensive coordinator Nick Caley has emphasized continuing to build Harrison’s comfort with the system. His first week is about absorbing assignments and getting useful work done before the trip, with his role able to develop as the adjustment continues.

The matchup at Wembley Stadium pairs a 1-4 Houston team with a 4-1 Jacksonville side. For Harrison, the first useful measure will be how effectively he handles the opportunities the Texans give him. A familiar quarterback can help the transition; Sunday's game will provide the first evidence of how that familiarity transfers into Houston’s offense.
