The 49ers Are 5–0. How Often Does That Start Win a Super Bowl?

San Francisco has the record and the roster. History says a perfect first month is a real advantage, and still a long way from a championship.

The San Francisco 49ers are 5–0 after a 32–29 win at Seattle on Sunday. They have the best record in the NFC West, a quarterback and skill group that can score, and a reminder from their own recent history that an unbeaten start does not settle February.

What the first five games actually were

The wins have not all looked the same.

That is 154 points scored and 93 allowed, a plus-61 margin. The Rams and Dolphins wins were by 20 and 22 points. The Broncos win was by 10. Arizona and Seattle were one-score games. Seattle was the messiest of them: San Francisco had 269 yards, 14 first downs, and still won because Brock Purdy led two late scoring drives and the defense stopped the Seahawks on fourth down in the final minute.

Purdy finished that game 19 of 29 for 189 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans were all part of the skill group around him. The 5–0 record is real. It is not five blowouts.

How often a 5–0 start ends with a Super Bowl

A CBS Sports count published in October 2023 found that nine of 62 teams to start 5–0 since 1990 went on to win the Super Bowl. That is about one in seven.

SeasonTeam
1990New York Giants
1991Washington
1997Denver Broncos
1998Denver Broncos
1999St. Louis Rams
2004New England Patriots
2006Indianapolis Colts
2009New Orleans Saints
2015Denver Broncos

The most recent champion on that list is the 2015 Broncos. The 2023 49ers were still 5–0 when CBS published the count. They reached the Super Bowl and lost. The 2024 Chiefs started 9–0, so they were 5–0 as well, and they lost the Super Bowl. In 2025, the last unbeaten team had only four wins, so no club even brought a 5–0 start into the title race.

A start this clean usually belongs to a good team. It does not usually belong to the champion. Minnesota is also 5–0, and two unbeaten teams cannot both win the Super Bowl.

Do the 49ers have the team?

They have the pieces that make the question fair. Kyle Shanahan is still the coach. Purdy is playing, McCaffrey is the back, and the passing game has Kittle, Samuel and Evans. They have already beaten a division rival on the road in a game they did not control for four quarters.

The caution is the same franchise’s last 5–0 season. In 2023 San Francisco opened that way, won 12 games and lost the Super Bowl. This roster can score and it can survive a messy afternoon. Twelve games are left, including a Week 11 meeting with the other unbeaten team, the Vikings, in Mexico City.

The 49ers belong in the championship conversation because of who is on the field, not only because the record is perfect. History says that conversation is the right size. A Super Bowl prediction is not.
